France's high-stakes legislative elections propelled the far-right National Rally to a strong but not overwhelming lead in the first round of voting on June 12. The party, led by Marine Le Pen, won 23.6% of the vote, coming in second behind Emmanuel Macron's centrist coalition, which won 27.9%. It currently holds 88 seats in France's National Assembly, but polls suggest it could become the biggest party in the body for the first time in the party's history.

On Sunday, July 7, French voters returned to the polls to elect the remaining members of the Assemblée. Voter turnout was high, with more than 50% of registered voters casting a ballot. The National Rally is hoping to build on its strong showing in the first round and win a majority of seats in the Assembly. Macron's coalition is hoping to hold on to its lead and prevent the National Rally from gaining too much power.

The results of the election will have a significant impact on France's political landscape. If the National Rally wins a majority of seats, it will be the first time that a far-right party has controlled the Assembly since World War II. This could lead to a number of changes in French policy, including a crackdown on immigration, a reduction in welfare spending, and a more confrontational approach to the European Union.

The election is also being closely watched by other European countries, which are also facing the rise of far-right parties. If the National Rally wins, it will be seen as a sign that the far right is gaining ground in Europe. This could lead to a shift in the balance of power in the European Parliament and other European institutions.
